Price check on liberty double eagle

I'm selling something and the buyer offered me: "A Liberty seated $20 US gold coin dated 1894. Referred to as a Liberty Double eagle coin. 90% gold, 10% copper"

From the checking I've done that should be worth atleast $550 FRNs correct?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Price check on liberty double eagle

The $20 Liberty gold pieces contain .96750 of an ounce of gold. There is only the head of Liberty on the obverse of the coin, so "seated" is not correct. I would guess the minimum value is the same as an ounce of gold, more if it is in better condition.

I think it would be a little more. $20 gold has a melt value of almost $540 right now. Even common dates should have a premium of $20-$30. I think when he said seated its referring to the eagle, as opposed to it being a flying eagle.

Re: Price check on liberty double eagle

Perhaps. There is such a thing as a "Seated Liberty" silver dollar. Lady Liberty is seated, holding a flag. Maybe someone confused the two. I was just going by the proper names, as listed in the red book. You're right about the 1894 being a common date coin. Over 1.3 million coins minted that year. The value of the coin doesn't increase much, until you get to the uncirculated grades.

At $7 under spot I am a buyer....all day long. I picked up an AU Liberty Double Eagle for $10 over spot and thought it was a smokin' deal. Do your research. Make sure you know what your getting. The "seated" sounds fishy, could be bad communication.
Good Luck

I've dealt with the guy before and no issues (no PM's until now). I'm trading him a Norinco 320 Uzi -value about $550, so he'll be sending the coin along with his FFL before I can ship anyway. Not that I'm worried about this guy screwing me...

Thanks for all the answers thus far!

Sweet deal for both of you. I think old coins are cool and enjoy them. However I won't pay big premiums for numismatic value. If I can pick up "generic gold" (common coins) cheap, I am all over it. Gold is gold, right? Recognizable and people think they are cool when I go to resale. Paying less premium than a Gold Eagle. You trust the guy. Whats not to like?
Enjoy

Too bad this coin isn't for sale, even though I have to admit I probably mislabeled it. Not that heavily into numiastics, especially gold coins. I only know which ones I have, not their given or assigned names.

Promethus, thanks for the vote of confidence. It is appreciated.

FWIW,

My rule on gold double eagles, pre 1933 $20 gold or whatever you call them:
If I can pick it up for the same as a modern gold eagle bullion, I buy it.

Prag,
Thanks also for the vote of confidence. Some time when I have the time I may post a picture of the coin in question.
